He did not agree with this very high fee.
Jake Hughes was wrongly accosted by EasyJet staff for his carry-on bag, which allegedly did not meet the baggage size requirements.
“I couldn’t believe they were trying to pay me for something that clearly fits within the divide,” Hughes, a resident of Worcestershire, England, told Kennedy News and Media.
An EasyJet employee advised Hughes to repack his bag so that the luggage could “fall freely” inside the size bin.
However, even when he did this by rearranging things and dressing in jeans and T-shirts, apparently it still wasn’t enough for the “happy” employee.
“He said he could see I had my clothes on and that I should tidy my bag, not empty it. It was crazy,” added the Englishman.
In a rush to board his flight from Manchester Airport to Lisbon, Portugal, in October. 17, Hughes paid the “ridiculous” $62 to bypass the inexcusable airline employee.
To refute their claims, Hughes, 27, captured a clip proving his suitcase fit “perfectly” within the luggage size box. However, EasyJet demanded that he delete the footage in exchange for a refund for his carry-on bag.
“When I went to board the flight, he said he was going to cut off my boarding pass if I didn’t delete the footage,” Hughes revealed. “I was in shock. I just stood there, wearing two pairs of jeans and two T-shirts. It was just an absolute nightmare.”
Hughes obeyed the staff’s order and boarded the flight, enraged by the disgruntled interaction.
Luckily for him, though, he didn’t delete all footage of his luggage fitting into the compartment “like a dream” and was able to upload the video to TikTok as soon as he landed.
The video racked up more than 5 million views online, with people sharing their frustrations with the script.
EasyJet quickly contacted Hughes, apologizing for the mishap and offering to refund his fine, which he has refused.
“I’m not sure I would have been offered a refund if it hadn’t gone as viral as it did,” Hughes admitted. “Why should I get a refund and not everyone else who was unfairly charged just because I filmed it?”
EasyJet released a statement about the situation: “We are investigating with our ground handling provider at Manchester Airport to understand why Mr Hughes was charged for his bag, which appears to be in line with compensation his.”
However, TikTokers shared their frustrations with the cash-hungry employee’s reaction.
“What about on earth? I have never seen a bag fit better! I hope you get your money back,” one person asked.
Hughes noted that his girlfriend specially bought his carry-on bag for EasyJet flights and never had a problem with it before his flight to Portugal.
“Yes, I think we should travel with another airline. They want the footage hidden because they know you and the other passengers are right,” added another.
“I’m freaking out just watching this,” commented one observer. “This happened to me and I paid stupidly because I was so embarrassed.”
